analytikjena Short Application Sum Parameter Analysis -TOCMeasurements of samples with high concentrations of several salts General Modern wet chemical analysers often represent a more cost-effective alternative for TOCdetermination for many applications. Wet-chemical digestion with persulfate in the presence of hard UV radiation at increasedtemperature is suitable for nearly every type of application beginning in the ultra low concentrationrange up to highly contaminated waste waters plus especially very high saline samples includingacids at extremely low operating costs. Measurements with the multi N/C UV HS Several solutions of salts were prepared each containing 10 mg/I TOC (potassium hydrogenphthalate) and different amounts of nitrate (100 g/l), sulfate (100g/l), phosphate (50 g/l) andchloride (5g/l). These solutions were analyzed using the“high content mode”- a combination of UV-light andpersulfate digestion. This mode is particularly suitable even for very high salt concentrations(limited only for chlorides up to 5 g/l) and TOC determination in higher concentrated acids. Thehigh content mode is the more elegant and cost effective alternative in comparison to hightemperature combustion TOC systems for difficult applications. The TOC concentration of 10 mg/l could be recovered at the 100 % level in all “salty” sampleswithout any trouble. Results obtained with the multi N/CUV HS Conclusion The running costs of wet chemical TOC analyzers are rather low in comparison to hightemperature combustion systems due to the less aggressive digestion. No need to exchangepermanently consumables like combustion tubes, catalyst filling etc. Extremely low running costs can be achieved with the multi N/C UV HS thanks to the long servicelife of the UV lamp and the robust NDIR detection system. This predestines the multi N/C UV HSfor the preferred solution for many TOC applications not only for low polluted samples butespecially for samples containing high salt concentrations, like e.g. commonly analyzed inelectroplating industry (galvanic bathes).
