Photonic crystal sPCd or photonic band-gap material is a material that possesses a periodic modulation of refractive index. Such a material exhibits a so-called photonic band gap where certain ranges of frequencies of the electromagnetic waves cannot propagate, which is analogous to the electronic band gap in semiconductors. By tailoring the photonic band gap, light can be manipulated in a PC.
