The pulp processing solutions mainly contain NaOH, Na2S, and Na2CO3. The composition of these components should be monitored in pulp quality control process. This application note introduces the method in which barium chloride is added to precipitate carbonate salt to titrate sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide with hydrochloric acid and then formaldehyde is added to titrate the alkali hydroxide formed by its reaction with sulfide with hydrochloric acid. Titration is continued to titrate the carbonate salt successively at this stage. (See “Note” for details of chemical reactions occurring during the titration.)
