Common visible and invisible airborne contaminants include metal ions, inside dust, pyrogens (fever-producing substances), tobacco smoke, hair, plant spores, carbon black, bacteria, yeast cells, viruses, and pollen. Requirements for a clean environment are as diverse as the types of applications implemented. For example, semi-conductor producers require an ultra-clean environment when applying thousands of circuits to a miniature chip. Pharmaceutical manufacturers must control airborne contamination to protect the buyers of their products. Some manufacturers depend on cleanrooms to provide high quality air. Most laboratory professionals rely on their controlled environment laboratory equipment, such as cell culture incubators and biological safety cabinets, to provide clean air and control many of the variables required for experiments, cell growth, etc.
