Turbulence generated by wave breaking was investigated using a novel non-intrusivemeasurement technique called bubble image velocimetry (BIV). The violent velocity field in thehighly aerated region of a broken wave was obtained using BIV. The mean velocity and turbulentintensity were obtained by ensemble averaging 20 repeated measurements. It was found that themaximum mean velocity reached 1.81C with C being the phase speed, occurred shortly after the firstimpingement. The maximum turbulence intensity, however, occurred at the second impingementinduced by the first splash, reached 0.96C or 67% of the maximum mean velocity at that moment.
