    How to give your paper a proper titleThe title page is the first page of a paper and includes title, running title, author name, affiliation and correspondence address. Often scientists use title to determine whether they will read a paper or not, so an improperly titled paper may never reach the audience for which it was intended. Although the details of the title page are specified by the instructions for each journal, their suggestions for title selection may not be adequate.A title should accurately describe the content of the paper, be revealing and exciting, but generally does not contain an active verb. Omit all waste words such as "A study of ...", "Investigations of ...", "Observations on ...", etc. The title might indicate the topic you will be discussing, for example: Lab 4 - Dependence of photosynthetic activity on wavelength of incident light. Or, it might summarize the take-home message of your paper, for example: hyploci control cell pattern formation in the vegetative mycelium of Aspergillus nidulans. Either way, the title gives your reader their first clue of your paper contents, and sets up an implicit contract that your report must then fulfill. Indexing and abstracting services depend on the accuracy of the title, extracting from it keywords useful in cross-referencing and computer searching. If the study is of a particular species, name it in the title. If the inferences made in the paper are limited to a particular region, then name the region in the title. Currently, titles are often a one-sentence summary of the main message. Because most people scan titles by looking at their beginning and ending, the most important words should be located in these places. A bold phrase or name (heading) ending with a colon and followed by a descriptive phrase (subtitle) provides initial recognition plus crucial information. For example, the title below readily draws the readers attention: Human Sulfite Oxidase: Irreversible Inactivation by Futile Chloride. The title should be specific to communicate to the reader the question being answered in the paper. A good title is straightforward and uses keywords that researchers in a particular field will recognize. For example, if you are asking a question about the inheritance patterns of the gene for aldehyde oxidase production in Drosophila melanogaster, a possible title might be "Inheritance of the Gene for Aldehyde Oxidase in Drosophila melanogaster." Something like "Inheritance in Fruit Flies" is too general, and "A Study of the Inheritance of the Enzyme Aldehyde Oxidase in the Fruit Fly Drosophila melanogaster" is too wordy. The words "A Study of the" are superfluous, and "Enzyme" and "Fruit Fly" are redundant. The suffixase indicates that aldehyde oxidase is an enzyme, and most scientists know that Drosophila melanogaster is the scientific name of a common fruit fly species. However, it is appropriate to include in the title both common and scientific names of less known species. Sometimes after you have written the paper, you develop a different perspective than the one you began with, so deal with the Title last. At the submission stage, reviewers are probably less interested in the title than the general reader. In fact, the reviewer and the reader will have different perspectives in regard to the title. The reviewer is already committed to reading the paper and will read it regardless of the title. But the reader is faced with many competing publications and may need to be lured into picking up your article. Therefore, it is a good idea to try to put some verve into the title, being careful not to sacrifice the quality of the paper or the integrity of your science. The Title should be realistic, but if you are confident in the data and your data demonstrate your conclusions, put it right up front and grab the reader's attention. Think very carefully about your title because the reader is going to look to see that what the title promised was delivered in the data.The title should be appropriate for the intended reader: 1.The title usually describes the subject matter of the article: Effect of Smoking on Academic Performance" 2.Sometimes a title that summarizes the results is more effective: Students Who Smoke Get Lower GradesCONTENTS Describe contents clearly and precisely, so that readers can decide whether to read the report.  Provide key words for indexing. Place the title about 7 cm from the top of the title page.
