美国BUCKAboutBuckFrom1960to1970,RobertAndersonworkedforalargeCTbasedinstrumentmanufacturerasaserviceengineerrepairinginstruments.Robertbefriendedafewcolleagueswhoworkedinthesalesdepartment.Theyallassuredhimthathewouldbeagreatsalesman,andthatallhehadtodowasapplyfortheopenpositionintheBostonoffice.Sowithalittlenervousapprehension,Robertaskedhissupervisorifhecouldapplyforasalesposition.Hewaspromptlytoldthathecouldneverbeasalespersonwithoutacollegedegree.Thisbrushagainsttheglassceilingin1970resultedinBuckScientificbeingcreatedlaterthatyearinRobert'sbasementtoofferthirdpartyAnalyticalinstrumentationsupportforconsiderablylessthantheinstrumentmanufacturers.RobertandhisfirsthireEdNadeaudrovemorethan300,000milesayearservicinginstrumentsacrossthecountryfortheentiredecadeoftheseventies.By1980Buckhadbrokenthe$1,000,000peryearmilestone,andthefocusturnedtosellingnewinstrumentsfromGBCandCecilalongwithre-manufacturedinstrumentsfromPerkinElmer.ThenRobertfacedamajordilemma,hehadanorderfor12AtomicAbsorptionSpectrophotometers,butthemanufacturerdiscontinuedtheproduct.Robertthenhiredanengineerandstarteddesigninginstrumentstofilltheorder.Sincethenourcompanyhasdesignedinstrumentswithafocusonthecostconscioussegmentoftheanalyticalinstrumentmarket.Oursuccesscanbeattributedtoouroutstandingcustomerservice,realisticprices,andreliableinstruments.Sincewewerefoundedbyaserviceengineer,wedesigninstrumentsthatdonotrequireverymuchservice.Thishasendearedustothesmalllabsandschoolsoftheworldwherebudgetscanbetight.Generallyspeakingpeoplewhospendtheirownmoneypreferdealingwithasmallcompanylikeusbecausewegetit.Wealsodon'traiseourpricesjustbecausewecan,ourinstrumentsparepartspriceshaveremainedalmostunchangedforthepasttenyears.OurAtomicAbsorptionSpectrophotometersandInfraredSpectrophotometersarebuiltinNorwalkCT.Bothinstrumentshavemanyhappyusers.Itisverycommonforpeoplenottoneedanyservicingfor10or15yearsafterpurchasingthem.Theyareworkhorsesbuilttowithstandtortuouslycorrosiveenvironmentlikeplatingshopsandmines.TheinfraredislovedbymanyaroundtheworldwhodonothaveadequateairconditioningtorunanFTIR.Inthesecasesweareoftentheirlasthope,andtheM530costsabout1/2thepriceofanequivalentFTIR,socustomerssavemoneyandsolvetheirproblematthesametime.
