EMISSION·FLUORESCENCE·FORENSICS·GRATINGSFOEM·RAMAN·SPECTROSCOPIC SYSTEMS·THIN FILMS Characterizing Tooth Decay with Fluorescence Introduction Quick and quantitative analytical evaluationof tooth decay is required in any study of the en-vironmental factors promoting such decay. Thisinformation is essential to any study of whichdental products are most effective in slowing orarresting the decay. Teeth are naturally fluorescent solids, and arehighly-scattering samples that can introduce in-terference that would mask fluorescence indica-tors. Thus, a SPEXQ FLUOROLOGR spectro-fluorometer was selected, taking advantage ofdouble monochromators for ultra-pure spectra.Use of a FLUOROLOGQ allowed picosecondtime-discrimination via the FLUOROLOGQ-Taulifetime accessory for even more informationabout the samples. Results Fig.1 shows a contour plot of the excitation-emission matrix of the sample. The plot resultsfrom scanning the fluorescence at various excita-tion wavelengths. The clean enamel surface ex-hibited two large fluorescence bands at 430 and470 nm. Fig. 2 shows a surface heavily damaged bydecay. Though the 430- and 470-nm peaks werestill present, their relative intensities were re-versed. In addition, a new peak surfaced at 650nm. Lifetime data from the FLUOROLOGR-Tauconfirmed that there was indeed a third compo-nent present at 650 nm, with a long lifetime ofabout 600 ns. Conclusion The FLUOROLOGRsystem providesquantitative assessment of tooth decay, via the FLUOROLOGQ's exclusive strong stray-lightrejection, and ability to detect IR fluorescence. The FLUOROLOGQ-Tau accessory pro-vides an additional dimension of discrimination.With these data, new dental treatments and prod-ucts may be assessed.
