Itraconazole is a triazole derivative with a broad spectrum of antifungal activety. Many fungal strains have been effectively treated with the drug. The drug inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, the primary sterol in fungi and yeast membranes, thus critically altering the permeability of the menbranes.
