The total acid is determined by titrating with 0.1mol/L sodium hydroxide titrant solution until it reaches pH 7.2 as end point first. Continue to dispense the titrant until pH 8.2 and add a certain amount of formaldehyde to produce formic acid. By doing this, the amino acid will be determined by titrating 0.1mol/L NaOH to pH8.2.
