Current and future developments of the combustion engine serve
first and foremost to significantly reduce both fuel consumption
and harmful emissions. In pursuing this goal, the BMW Group is
consistently implementing the principle of "EfficientDynamics”,
optimising fuel economy, performance, and weight all at the
same time. Application of the spray-guided BMW DI combustion
principle in the internal combustion gasoline engine offers the
best potential in achieving this target [1].
The main requirements in a stratified combustion process are:
• To provide a compact, stable, reproducible, and homogenised
fuel/air mixture at the place and time of ignition.
• To reliably ignite the fuel/air mixture prepared through the ignition
system.
Consistent development of injector technology has set the foundation
in recent years for the development of the spray-guided DI
combustion process. This combustion principle enhanced by
BMW to production level and featured in the new generation of
BMW’s four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines in the European
markets, is characterised by the compact arrangement of the
injector (High Precision Injection) and the spark plug in the combustion
chamber, as shown in Figure 1, and enables to capitalise
on the thermodynamic potential of stratified combustion in an
optimised process [2,3].
