In the 1980s, there was great enthusiasm about molecular assemblies based on Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films. Visions were proposed for the next millennium such as “Molecular electronics in which organic molecules perform an active function in the processing of information
and in transmission and storage” (1–3). These proposals raised many expectations. Being now at the beginning of a new millennium, this review will aim to critically assess the accomplishments and perspectives.
