Mobility always has been and still is one of the most
important needs of humankind, and it is evident that
most people prefer satisfying this need with their
own cars. At the same time the downsides of traffic
like pollution, emission of carbon dioxide and consumption
of resources are becoming more and more
obvious. But even in societies where the need for
change has become generally agreed upon, no real
change in behavior can be observed, and even a
slowdown in the increase of traffic has to be considered
a success. The major part of the world’s population
is living in emerging countries which are still at
the beginning of this process and shows – understandably
– no interest in doing without the amenities
we take for granted. In the light of the ongoing rapid
economic growth of countries like China and India it
is obvious that the call for action on reducing the consumption
of fossil fuels in the future will be even
greater than it is today.
