The BP1M2 Series is an Extension set for Thorlabs' BP100 Series Beam Profiler, which provides an automated M² beam quality analysis. This system allows the measurement of the times-diffraction-limit M² factor of a laser beam and its reciprocal beam quality, K=1/M².

To truly characterize a laser beam, a single profile measurement is not sufficient. Beam quality is more accurately expressed in terms of the M² factor, which characterizes the beam in terms of its deviation from an ideal diffraction-limited Gaussian beam with a pure TEM00 mode.

For scientific or laser cutting applications using very high beam intensities, or high-resolution optical scanning microscopy applications, high-quality, highly focused beams are required. Under some measurement conditions a beam may appear Gaussian, but the beam quality may still be quite low due to the presence of higher order modes. In this case, for the same divergence angle, the focused beam diameter will be M² times higher than the diffraction limit. However, a beam with an M² value close to 1 is a precondition for optimal focusability. Therefore, an accurate determination of the M² value is the true standard in beam qualification, and this requires measurements at different points along the beam path.

Extension Set Description
The BP1M2 M² Analysis Extension Set is comprised of a motorized translation stage, plus mounting accessories to be used with the BP100 Beam Profiler. (Parts sold separately. Please see the Shipping List tab for Extension Kit parts list, and the Configurations tab for suggestions on complete system parts). The stage movement is fully controlled by the software module* of the BP100, which allows it to take measurements at different stage positions and perform a complete M² analysis. This is done by taking measurements at different positions along the beam propagation axis of the focused beam diameter, which is formed from the collimated input beam using an appropriate focal length lens.

Divergent Beams
A hyperbolic curve fit to the measured data yields reliable and repeatable values for beam waist diameter and position, Rayleigh range, divergence angle, beam pointing direction, waist asymmetry, divergence asymmetry, and astigmatism.

Nearly Parallel Beams
The divergence angle of nearly parallel beams can be accurately determined as well by a linear curve fit. Both methods, the hyperbolic curve fit of a focused beam and the linear fit without focussing lens, can be combined, at which point all beam parameters of the unfocussed beam are approximated. The combined fitting method allows the characterization of unfocussed beams even if the waist location and Rayleigh length are far out of the scanning range of the translation stage.

The BP1M2 M² Analysis Extension Set allows automated, motorized, computer controlled M² analysis with our BP100 Series (sold separately). The Extension Set comprises the motorized translation stage, plus mounting accessories to mount a BP100 Beam Profiler onto the stage and the stage onto a breadboard. The set is available for three different travel lengths: 50, 150, and 300 mm. The translation stage is controlled by the M² software module of the BP100 Series Beam Profiler via RS232. No additional driver is required.
The BP100 Series Beam Profiler and any other necessary components for beam alignment and adjustment have to be ordered separately. A power supply and serial cable is included with the extension set.
