Rather than discuss a single research topic, this paper reviews
the combination of different research facilities and optical diagnostics
used in a project to optimize a homogeneously charged
GDI combustion system for part load conditions to deliver fuel
economy benefits without detrimental emissions by reducing the
gas exchange losses through variable inlet valve actuation.
Fundamental studies of the fuel sprays are described with an
atmospheric and high pressure-temperature spray cell using the
phase Doppler technique and single shot CCD imaging respectively.
These data have been used to initiate and validate CFD
spray modelling of the liquid break-up using a VOF method and as
an input for an empirical spray targeting model. Two single cylinder
GDI engines have been constructed, one optical and one
thermodynamic, with matched performances under part load
conditions. Both engines were operated at standard test points
of 2000 rpm and 2.7 bar IMEP and 3500 rpm and 5.7 bar IMEP
where the IMEP was calculated over a 720° cycle to include
pumping losses. These test points were achieved using four inlet
valve strategies; throttled with standard valve lift profiles, unthrottled
with EIVC for both valves and EIVC with the inlet valves
operating independently to introduce swirl into the in-cylinder
flow. The thermodynamic engine indicated that significant ISFC
gains could be achieved, by up to 17% under part load conditions,
by combining EIVC and only one inlet valve with an early injection
timing. However, the optimum results were dependent on which
of the two valves was opened. The optical engine with the use of
spray imaging and particle image velocimetry highlighted the
reasons being due to superior air-fuel mixing during the open
valve period.
