Determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and PBDD/Fs during the recycling of high impact polystyrene containing decabromodiphenyl ether and antimony oxide

Chemosphere ; Volume 44, Issue 6, September 2001, Pages 1353-1360
Abstract
A high impact polystyrene (HIPS) plastic, flame retarded with decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) has been repeatedly processed and the amount of debromination of the flame retardant and possible formation of PBDD/F was monitored. No indications of debromination were found. The reprocessed (recycled) plastic was found to comply with the German Chemicals Banning Ordinance. The concentrations of relevant PBDD/F congeners were at least one order of magnitude below the regulated limit values for PBDD/F (1 ppb for the sum of four congeners, 5 ppb for the sum of all eight regulated congeners).

Abstract
Gas chromatography coupled to low-resolution mass spectrometry with electron capture negative ionization as detection mode (GC-LRMS (ECNI)) has been compared to gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry using electron ionization as detection mode (GC-HRMS (EI)) for determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in biological samples. Extracts of 5.0 g plasma, serum and milk samples were analyzed using both methods. The GC-LRMS (ECNI) and GC-HRMS (EI) systems were found to be equally well suited for determination of PBDEs in the biological samples, as well as in standard solutions, with respect to response, detection limits and repeatability at the pg-level. The estimated limits of detection (LOD) in milk extracts ranged from 0.3–0.6 pg PBDE/g milk and 0.4–0.7 pg PBDE/g milk, for the GC-LRMS (ECNI) and GC-HRMS (EI) systems, respectively. The method repeatability including sample preparation was in the range 4.7–8.4% and 0.6–10% relative standard deviation (RSD) for the GC-LRMS (ECNI) and GC-HRMS (EI) systems, respectively.
Determination of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) in biological tissues with special emphasis on QC/QA measures

Abstract
This paper gives an overview on the determination of PBDEs in biological tissues, such as human blood and milk, cow’s milk and fish with special emphasis on quality control and assurance measures which are mandatory and a prerequisite for a reliable determination of environmental pollutants at trace levels. First experiences in the determination of PBDEs have been gained nearly 20 years ago. Due to great progress in the development of analytical instrumentation, the applied GC/MS methods resulted in very low detection limits. Furthermore, because of unexpected findings in biological tissues, the determination of PBDEs became of growing importance in the past few years. The analysis of hundreds of samples demonstrated the need for extensive quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA)
measures which will be reported in detail in the following.
