As I understand it, In principle since there is a chiral center the
two beta protons must be magnetically and chemically non-equivalent.
From group theory, there is no symmetry operation that can make them
equivalent. In a molecule with no chiral center there will be a
symmetry operation that would make geminal protons equivalent. Hope
