The Phase function can monitor the tip reasonant frequency shift (lag) when tip interact with surface. The tip phase shift by surface is because tip stick on surface. The real reason is viscosity 黏性. To use hard or soft to describe surface for phase shift is a common way, not a precious way. But basicly, soft material is with more viscosity. For more visocosity (softer) material absorb more energy from tip, make phase lag bigger. From phase image, it will sohw dark or bright color depend on how you set up color table for image display.
