On June 4, 2010, the State of Connecticut became the first state in
the US to ban “total” cadmium in children’s jewelry1. Children’s jewelry is defined as any jewelry, including charms, bracelets, pendants,necklaces, earrings or rings, and component thereof, that is designed or intended to be worn or used by children 12 years of age or younger.The new law (Public Act No. 10-113) prohibits children's jewelry containing cadmium of more than 0.0075 % by weight from being sold,offered for sale or distributed in Connecticut beginning in 20142. Asimilar law banning soluble cadmium in jewelry for children up to the age of 6 was signed into law in Minnesota on May 15, 2010; taking effect on January 1, 2011 for manufacturers or wholesalers and
March 1, 2011 for retailers.
