Attached Proton Test (APT)
The APT pulse sequence generates a 1D spectra with CH3 and CH carbons phased down and CH2 and C carbons phased up. Unlike the DEPT experiment, this technique is not able to distinguish between CH3 and CH carbons and between CH2 and C carbons.
Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer (DEPT)
The DEPT experiment is similar to the APT pulse sequence in that it can be used to determine the number of protons that are attached to a carbon atom. Quaternary carbon atoms don’t generate a signal in the DEPT procedure. The DEPT technique can be used to distinguish between CH3 and CH carbons and between CH2 and C carbons.
