    集团 group

    上进心 gumption

highly praised by boss and colleagues for excellent work

precise, earnest, and self-demanding. Strict on quality control of the products.

    Totally agree.

As I am not living in mainland China, therefore I am particularly aware of the cultural and political differences. “领导” is an example.

老外call their领导as boss. In written English, the Chinese term 领导 (of an organization) is equivalent to superior, supervisor, supervising officer, managing staff etc. “Leader” is seldom used, especially in private companies.

Leader also means 领袖. In fact, most of the US people agree that President Lincoln Washington was their leader, but President Bush is only an employee of the US government; a civil servant serving US people, not their leader.

Not a 错误 , just a cultural difference.

If we are translating an novel of 60’, it may be appropriate to translate the word 领导 as “leader” (with quotation mark) and add a footnote (always used in translation) to explain what a 领导 means in China in 60’. At that time, one’s marriage may have to be approved by the 领导 of his unit!

The implied meaning of 领导 in mainland China is changing and 当局者, such as you, may not be aware of.
