black sheep
对这条短语的正确理解，不能望文生义地将其译成"黑羊"。不过，该短语的产生也确实同羊相关。
在任何一群白色的羊群里都有混杂其间的黑羊。在英语里还有"There is a black sheep in every flock."这样的谚语。
有的人认为 black sheep 这一短语就是由这一谚语发展变化而来。
但是，人们为什么对黑羊如此感兴趣，以至于出现这样一条短语呢？
原来，在西方国家中，人们认为黑绵羊的毛不如白绵羊毛珍贵。同时，黑绵羊混杂在白羊之间容易使白羊害怕。
西方人和中国人一样认为黑色代表邪恶。
现在，人们用这一短语表示：a member of a group that stands in conspicuous and unfavorable contrast to the other members。汉语中常同"害群之马"这样的意义相关联。例如：
All the students in our class, except Tom are well-behaved. He's the black sheep.
我们班里的同学除去汤姆之外，品行都很好。他真是害群之马。
Smith broke the window yesterday. He always made trouble everywhere and was considered a black sheep in the neighborhood.
史密斯昨天把窗户打破了。他总是这样恶作剧，因此邻居都认为他是匹害群之马。
The two sisters worked hard in their spare time and supported their brother who they thought had some talent in art. But he spent all the money and learnt nothing. He was the black sheep of the family.
姐妹二人业余时间辛勤劳作，支援著那位她们认为有些艺术天份的兄弟。但是他挥霍光了姐姐们寄来的钱却学无所成。他是个不肖之子。

Black sheep is commonly used to describe a member of a family who is a disgrace or who does bad things or is a failure.

由此可见，black sheep并非完全用于贬义，也可以用于形容不幸。例如说，一家人都很成功，但某一个孩子只是做普通的工作，经济上仅能果腹，这时候可以说 He is a black sheep in the family. 这句话，只是形容家庭某一成员不幸，而非骂人的意思。
