The purpose of the qualification measurement is to prove the fidelity of the optical transducer, that is to ensure that measurements of ideal samples conform to theoretical prediction. To achieve this we require a scattering sample that generates a significant signal over the whole dynamic range of the detector. It is a property of light scattering from fine particles that any sample generates scattering over all angles and thus a single sample can be used.
The choice of sample for performance verification is made to attempt to optimise the ability of the measurement to identify system calibration problems. The sample chosen is a good compromise size that allows reliable and reproducible measurements that are nevertheless sensitive to changes in system calibration.
