CHEMICALLY HYDROLYSABLE CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND
This fraction is added to the list, even though it does not appear in the literature as such, because of the number of studies that have reported the phenomenon. It arises when a raw or treated (stabilized) wastewater is further subjected to chemical oxidation with chlorine, ozone, chlorine dioxide, and so forth. The most common observation is that the chemical treatment breaks down initially inert organic materials, often large natural and synthetic polymers, to smaller fragments that are amenable to biodegradation. This effect has been noted many times after ozonation (Parakeva et al.,1998)
