Ching Ming is one of the 24 solar terms according to Chinese calendar. It denotes the weather during this time should be clear, “qing” with high visibility, “ming”. This is most likely due to continuous washing of the air with rain.
There were many legends how Chinese started to have the custom to sweep the tombs with offerings to ancestors. Anyway, the tradition custom is maintained until now for over 1000 years.

2. Just now, I looked up Ching Ming in BAIDU and found that Ching Ming began with a chilly beautiful story. In Spring andAutumn Period,Jin Wen Gong( Chong Er) got back to Jin to be the King successfully. He dicided to raised the rank and position of his assictants who had helped him during his escaping, among whom Jie Zhitui was one of the top. Unfortunately,Jin Wen Gong forgot Jie Zhitui,and other guys struggled for betterring ranks.Jie moved to the mountains and left the Jin Wen Gong. When Jin Wen Gong remembered Jie, he sent the troops to look for Jie. Finally, the troops burned the mountain to force Jie came out. While Jie chose death in the fire and didn't come out to accept the rank and position.
Jie'death was due to Jin Wen Gong's fault.So, Jin Wen Gong ordered that the day when Jie was dead was Cold Food Festival to memerize Jie.
Now some peaple take this story as the origin of Ching Ming Festival too.
